How to Make a Fire Resistance Potion (8:00, Splash, Lingering)

Nether wart, a water bottle and magma cream make a Potion of Fire Resistance: 3:00, or 8:00 with redstone. Splash and lingering too.

Here's how to make a fire resistance potion in Java Edition: brew a water bottle with Nether wart to get an Awkward Potion, then add magma cream. That gives a Potion of Fire Resistance lasting 3:00. Add redstone dust to the finished potion and it lasts 8:00. Everything here is current as of Java 26.3, per the Minecraft Wiki.

For a splash potion of fire resistance, brew the finished potion again with gunpowder. For a lingering one, brew a splash potion with dragon's breath. Fire Resistance has no stronger level, so redstone is a free upgrade: there is no trade-off in taking the longer duration.

Fire resistance potion recipe, step by step

  1. Fill glass bottles with water. Use a cauldron or a water source block. A source block fills as many bottles as you like.
  2. Fuel the brewing stand. Blaze powder is the fuel, and one piece holds 20 charges.
  3. Brew water bottles + Nether wart. This makes an Awkward Potion, the base for most potions.
  4. Brew the Awkward Potion + magma cream. This is the Potion of Fire Resistance (3:00).
  5. Optional: add redstone dust to the 3:00 potion for the 8:00 version.
  6. Optional: add gunpowder for splash, then dragon's breath for lingering.

Each brewing operation takes 20 seconds. There is no recipe book for brewing, so keep the order in mind: base, Nether wart, effect ingredient, then modifiers. If you've never set up a stand, our Potion of Weakness guide walks through the brewing basics.

Fire resistance potion 8 minutes: extended, splash and lingering

The 8:00 potion is the 3:00 potion plus redstone dust. Modifiers can be applied to several potions at once, so you can brew a whole row of bottles in a single operation. The wiki's own example brews a Fire Resistance and an Invisibility potion with gunpowder together.

Splash potions last as long as drinkable ones, and have since Java 1.9. Some older guides still show a shorter splash time; ignore them. Lingering potions last a quarter as long.

How to make magma cream

Magma cream has three sources in Java:

Piglins used to trade magma cream, but that was removed in Java 1.16.2, so don't barter for it. Magma cream is renewable and stacks to 64.

What Fire Resistance does (and doesn't) do

The effect gives complete immunity to fire damage: fire, blaze fireballs, fire charges, magma blocks and lava. That makes it the standard prep for a lava-adjacent job like finding and mining Ancient Debris.

Other ways to get a fire resistance potion

Bedrock only: a swamp hut cauldron can hold one. It isn't a Java source.

FAQ

What is fire resistance potion made of?

A water bottle, Nether wart and magma cream. Redstone makes it last 8:00, gunpowder makes it splash, and dragon's breath makes it lingering.

Does fire resistance work in lava?

Yes. While the effect is active you take no lava damage. In Java you still catch fire, so get out before it expires.

Why can't I make a fire resistance potion?

If you only get a Mundane Potion, you added magma cream to a plain water bottle. Magma cream only makes Fire Resistance on top of an Awkward Potion, so brew Nether wart first.

How to make fire resistance potion 8 minutes?

Brew the finished 3:00 potion with redstone dust. Splash works on both the 3:00 and 8:00 versions.
