The best Minecraft economy plugins for a Paper server in November 2026 are VaultUnlocked as the API bridge, EssentialsX as the economy provider that actually stores balances, and QuickShop-Hikari or ChestShop for player shops. A Minecraft server economy plugin is rarely one plugin: it is three layers that talk to each other.
The layers: an economy API (Vault or its fork VaultUnlocked) that gives other plugins one standard way to read and change money; an economy provider that holds the balances; and plugins on top that move money around, such as shops or a jobs plugin. This guide covers only the plugins we could verify on their own listings on 2026-11-05. Auction-house and shop-GUI plugins were not assessed, so they are not here.
Vault and VaultUnlocked: the API layer
Vault describes itself as "a Permissions, Chat, & Economy API" so plugins can hook into those systems without depending on each one individually. Its status is the awkward part: the latest release is 1.7.3 from July 17, 2020, the last commit to the GitHub repo was August 1, 2022, and the SpigotMC listing's tested versions stop at 1.17. Its README says Vault no longer maintains new plugin connectors, so other plugins must ship their own.
Community reviews on SpigotMC in 2026 say it still works on 1.21.x servers despite the age, and one reviewer says some hosts flag it as outdated. We found no source for how plain Vault behaves on 26.x.
VaultUnlocked (a fork from TheNewEconomy) is the maintained option. Modrinth describes it as "a modern drop-in Vault fork, with Folia support, and enhanced APIs", adding multicurrency, UUID and BigDecimal support and better Towny compatibility. It is LGPL-3.0-or-later, lists Bukkit, Folia, Paper, Purpur and Spigot, and covers Minecraft versions up to 26.3. Its repo had a commit on September 16, 2026 that bumped the plugin version to 2.20.3, while GitHub's latest tagged release was 2.20.1 (June 16, 2026). Check the current download rather than trusting a version number written here. "Drop-in" is the project's own description; we did not test every plugin against it.
Economy providers: where the money lives
EssentialsX
EssentialsX is the usual answer to "what do I install for balances?". Release 2.22.0 (May 31, 2026) targets Paper 26.1.2 and 1.21.11, with older versions back to 1.8.8 still supported but not a priority, and Spigot at low priority and possibly dropped. The project recommends the latest Paper. The most important caveat: EssentialsX does not support Folia yet, and its release notes warn that using it there risks losing userdata. It is free and GPLv3.
Its 2.22.0 notes confirm economy commands and settings exist, including /balance, /balancetop (with a baltop-entry-limit setting to cap memory use) and /eco. We could not load the EssentialsX docs, so we are not quoting other syntax or permission nodes. Read the docs for your version.
The New Economy (community fork)
The original The New Economy project was officially retired on January 1, 2026. A community fork, "The New Economy (Fork)" by GoodrichDev, continues it. It is AGPL-3.0-only, was updated last month as of our check, lists Minecraft 26.2 down to 1.13 on Bukkit, Folia, Paper, Spigot and Sponge, and offers unlimited currencies, a baltop, and SQL, MariaDB or YAML storage. It states that anything supporting Vault supports it. The honest caveat: it is a small fork (854 downloads on Modrinth on 2026-11-05), not the official project. We could not confirm whether it carries the VaultUnlocked multi-currency badge.
Shop plugins: spending the money
QuickShop-Hikari
QuickShop-Hikari needs no commands to create a shop: left-click a chest with the item and type the price in chat. It requires Minecraft 1.20+ and Java 21+, lists Folia, Paper, Purpur and Spigot, and is AGPL-3.0-only. Spigot is no longer supported in recent updates, and the authors recommend Paper or its forks. It needs Vault plus a Vault-compatible economy, supports tax and fees, and stores data in H2 or MySQL. Limits: each shop either buys or sells, not both, and items such as diamonds cannot be used as the currency. It collects opt-out bStats telemetry.
ChestShop
ChestShop calls itself the original physical-shop plugin, created in 2011 by Acrobot and now maintained under Phoenix616. It uses a sign on a chest: line 1 is auto-filled with your name, line 2 is the quantity, line 3 holds prices such as B 5:5 S, and line 4 is the item (or ? to autofill). Right-click the sign to buy and left-click to sell by default. Admin shops with unlimited stock use "Admin Shop" on line 1 and the ChestShop.admin permission. It is free, LGPL-2.1-or-later, and lists Folia, Paper, Purpur and Spigot up to 26.2; it was updated four months before our check. Some of its addons are flagged abandoned by the author.
Jobs Reborn: earning the money
Jobs Reborn lets players pick jobs such as building, mining, fishing or crafting and earn points, experience and in-game money, which requires an economy plugin. It officially supports Spigot and Paper (forks like Purpur may work but are unsupported) and needs the CMILib library. Its GitHub repo had a commit on November 4, 2026. We did not verify its price or supported-version list.

How to add an economy to your server
- Run Paper. EssentialsX and QuickShop-Hikari both recommend it; see Paper vs Spigot vs Purpur for the platform choice, or how to make a Minecraft server if you are starting from scratch.
- Install the API: VaultUnlocked, or Vault if your plugins need it and you accept its frozen status.
- Install one provider: EssentialsX, or the New Economy fork if you need multiple currencies.
- Check balances work using the provider's own balance command (
/balancein EssentialsX) and the settings in its docs for your version. - Add a shop plugin: QuickShop-Hikari or ChestShop, then make one test shop to confirm it can see your economy.
- Optionally add Jobs Reborn so players have a steady income.
Selling things to players for real money is a separate matter with its own rules; read Minecraft server monetization and the EULA first. For plugin hygiene afterwards, see Paper plugin best practices.
FAQ
What is the best economy plugin for Minecraft?
For most Paper servers: EssentialsX for balances, VaultUnlocked as the bridge, and QuickShop-Hikari or ChestShop for shops. We can't rank by popularity; download counts come from different platforms and dates and are not comparable.
Do I need Vault?
Usually yes, or VaultUnlocked. QuickShop-Hikari says to install Vault and an economy plugin supported by Vault, ChestShop works with economies through Vault, and EssentialsX's listing says Vault is needed for prefix and suffix support.
Paper or Spigot?
Paper. EssentialsX recommends it, QuickShop-Hikari no longer supports Spigot in recent updates, and Jobs Reborn supports both. Folia is the exception for EssentialsX, which does not support it.
A single-ledger economy
In MCRPG (coming soon), gold is the server's single global currency, and every movement of gold is recorded on an append-only ledger. How that works for players is in the economy guide.
